5 SKINCARE HACKS FOR A BUSY LIFE
Looking after your skin… you’re either a fan of the 10 step Korean skincare routine or you take on a wholesome “as need” basis approach… No matter your lifestyle, busy or not, here are five skincare hacks for even the busiest of us:
1. Cleansing oil as a one step skincare routine
Advice as old as time: Wash your face! Irrespective of whether your skin is as dry as the Sahara desert, or unwelcomingly greasy, every skin type can benefit from oil cleansing. The most common misconception is that putting any kind of oil, whether in a cleanser form or not, makes the skin oilier. PSA: it does not. Our skin types are defined by how much oil we produce naturally, and it is in our skin’s health’s best interest to maintain our skin barrier by making sure it is nourished by oil based ingredients that mimic our skin’s oils.
When you wash your face using an oil cleanser, it’s a multitasking wonder. Reasons being oil cleansers can dissolve and remove makeup and pollutants from the skin, cleanse away the unnecessary ‘dirty’ oily residue and it moisturises your skin at the same time which means you will still have a fresh, clean feeling but your skin won’t feel uncomfortably tight and won’t become dry or dehydrated.
Some of our favourite oil cleansers are:
- Tatcha One Step Camellia Cleansing Oil
- Eve Lom Cleanser
- Bare Minerals Oil Obsessed Total Cleansing Oil
- Shu Uemera Cleansing Oil
- Josie Maran Argan Cleansing Oil
2. Refrigerate metal spoons for de-puffing
Eyes, cheeks… the face… it can all get quite puffy looking sometimes, especially when we’ve done a cheeky and consumed above average quantities of sodium from the night before. Using the humble and common household item that are metal spoons, keep a pair of them tucked away in the refrigerator or freezer at all times for a pleasantly icy pair of tools to keep the extra “face” away.
Using the icy pair of metal spoons, place them over your eyes or anywhere that requires de-puffing. You’ll find that it’s a great wake up call without having to rinse your face in cold water, which is definitely not for everyone.
3. Toners with chemical exfoliators
Another age-old sentiment: Is toning necessary? It’s that awkward in-between step between a face wash and moisturising and honestly, it’s a little confusing as to what toners actually do. Toners have come a long way since being strictly perfumed, highly alcoholised water. We recommend keeping a toner with chemically exfoliating ingredients in your skin care cabinet.
With a toner that contains chemically exfoliating ingredients like glycolic acid or lactic acid, not only do they better your overall skin texture, cleanliness and radiance, they get rid of the bout of dead skin cells much more effectively than a physical scrub and they are also very effective at removing the tan that is guilty of looking patchy or crusty.
Our favourite toners with chemical exfoliators include:
- Ren Ready Steady Glow Daily AHA Tonic
- Glamglow Supertoner
- Mecca Cosmetica Glow-Giver Exfoliating Solution
- Glow Recipe PHA + BHA Pore-Tight Toner
4. Have a cold-pressed oil handy
A cold-pressed oil is the resulting oil which has undergone an extraction process that best preserves its nutritional quality. We recommend having a cold-pressed oil handy as it’s the best moisturising multi-tasker no matter what condition your skin is in. You can use them as a serum to enhance absorption of other skin conditioning products; a moisturiser to lock in any water-based serums; a skin-soother for severely dry patches, cracked skin or open wounds from naughty pimple popping or skin picking. They can be used as nail cuticle care or a hair product.
What you’ll find with a majority of cold-pressed oils sold as skincare is a bottle full of antioxidants, essential fatty acids and calming anti-inflammatory benefits. We have a few favourites too in relation to cold-pressed oils:
- Josie Maran 100% Pure Argan Oil
- Drunk Elephant Virgin Marula Luxury Facial Oil
- Sunday Riley Juno Antioxidant + Superfood Face Oil
- Go-To Face Hero
- Korres Wild Rose Brightening Absolute Oil
5. Muslin cloth to get rid of surface congestion
Muslin cloths… great for household cleaning, cooking, baking and definitely for assistance in cleansing the skin. Due to the soft and filmy texture of muslin cloths, you’ll find that they work amazingly at ridding surface congestion on the skin before you have to result to manual extraction. We recommend rinsing and wetting the muslin cloth using warm to hot water, and after cleansing your skin, gently massaging the wet muslin cloth against the skin area that has surface congestion. Before you know it, that pesky little whitehead disappears and you’re left with a fresh glow from a little bit of blood circulation.
So that’s all it takes… five simple skincare hacks for making your skin routine feel like a ritual, even for the busiest of us.
